Our Story
While on vacation in Fond-Tortue, our family experienced the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred on August 14, 2021 hat moderately destroyed the South side of Haiti. It was the worse day of our lives. As the house was shaking, I started running looking for a way out. I was hearing doors falling, walls being sliced, appliances falling to the floor while screaming for my 8-year-old son’s safety. When I finally made it outside, I saw my son and my husband holding hands, and shaking with everything around. We saw people screaming while running up and down the streets, stating: “Jesus! Jesus! Save our lives!’ Another one said: “Rocks rolled the mountains killing Solis.” There was smoke all over the area. We stood up on a platform shaking and breaking under our feet. Vehicles in our yard were jumping up and down. Fear, and uncertainty instantly took over our minds.
Some of the wounded started pouring to my house for medical care. Our headaches started right there. During the first 3 weeks after the earthquake, Maggy Jean-Gilles, RN, the founder of Meddha Foundation provided health care to those affected by the earthquake without the presence of the Haitian Government. Services were rendered under trees or privately based on mobility access. Miraculously, a Doctors Without Borders’ vehicle entering the area urgently transported severely sick patients to the main hospital in Fond-des-Blancs. Thanks to Doctors without Borders, we were able to save a few lives!
About a week later, many other organizations came to the area to provide healthcare as well; among them was Team Rubicon Organization. We will always be grateful to Team Rubicon partnership that positioned themselves as the Healthcare Leader in such desperate situation facing the people of Fond-Tortue. They held many mobile clinics: twice in Letang, three times in Deye Mon, once in Deye Ma, and once in Plaine Fond-Fond-Tortue.
Notwithstanding that situation, the founder gathered some volunteers in the community to distribute Tarps to those homeless resulted from the earthquake.
Many years prior to this experience, we have heard many stories related to chaotic situations in Haiti but never once imagined the Haitian Government was that careless toward the population. This experience being an eye opener, Meddha was founded in 2021 to help provide a sustainable support not just in Fond-Tortue; but also, other countries facing similar situations. Our presence in Fond-Tortue has a very positive impact on the community.
